Loading 20mm Tungsten Ammo into Phalanx CIWS' Magazine Drum
U.S. Navy sailors reload 20mm tungsten ammunition(offloading the dummy rounds at left and loading the tungsten ones(red sabots) at right) into the magazine drum of a Phalanx Closed-in Weapons System (Phalanx CIWS) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).
Phalanx CIWS is a close-in weapon system for defense against incoming threats such as small boats, surface torpedoes, anti-ship missiles and helicopters.
Phalanx CIWS mounts fire at a rate of 3,000 rounds per minute and have the magazine drum capacity of 1,550 rounds. The velocity of the rounds fired is about 3,600 feet per second or 1,100 m/s.
