"Central Children's World" opened its doors to children on June 6, 1957. The largest children's department store in the world was designed by architect Alexey Dushkin, the author of several metro station projects and the creator of one of the so-called “Stalinist high-rise buildings” on Red Gate Square.
"Children's World" is a unique store. This is the first store to have escalators installed inside. The first store with 25,000 sq. m. was given over to goods for children. Detsky Mir was not just a department store where people came for everyday shopping. People from all over the USSR brought their children to the Big Children's World.
For many people who visited Children's World, one of the most memorable interior details was the wall clock. The hut clock was interactive and literally came to life before the eyes of amazed children every hour. The melody began to play, the eyes on the dial slowly closed, and then, to meet the coming new hour, they opened smoothly and slowly. In addition, a puppet show began every hour. The children perceived the clock as a living being and waited for a new hour and a new performance. In "Children's World" the most delicious ice cream was sold for 20 kopecks, as well as the outlandish "Fanta".
Now “Central Children's World” continues its work after a long reconstruction. The famous clock has been replaced with a modern one, which is also where parents and children come to watch the interactive musical performance taking place on the walls next to the clock. The observation deck located on the roof is open. It is equipped with telescopes and you can see in great detail the details of the Kremlin, St. Basil's Cathedral, the building of Moscow State University and other architectural sights of the capital.
