Windows 11 recently dropped from Microsoft as the Generally Available (GA) release that has been expected for some time now. Many are going to start thinking about upgrading their PCs or installing fresh copies of Windows 11 on their hardware now that it has been officially released.

However, there are requirements that you want to be aware of, specifically around the requirement for the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) device now required for installing Windows 11 on your hardware. What is TPM?

Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a security device that is passive in nature but allows storing sensitive security information such as encryption keys. It can be used to store the encryption keys for disk encryption as an example. Windows 11 GA evidently requires this hardware device, even though the preview release builds I have been installed previously does not.

This video takes you through the behavior seen when installing Windows 11 GA inside VMware Workstation and the behavior you see without a TPM device. We look at how to add the vTPM to the Windows 11 GA virtual machine running inside VMware Workstation and see the difference in behavior during the install process.
