Ozempic, Wegovy, semaglutide and other GLP-1 agonists are excellent weight loss and diabetes management drugs. They have a significant effect on stomach emptying that puts patients having surgery at higher risk.
Dr. Richard Hilsden discusses the risks of these types of drugs for patients undergoing surgical procedures.
These drugs work, in part, by slowing the emptying of the stomach. This is an excellent effect that helps patients lose weight and control their diabetes; however, when it comes to surgery this increases the risk to the patients.
The American Society of Anesthesiologists now recommends stopping these medications more than 1 week prior to surgery.
