Ringworld was a novel written by science fiction author Larry Niven in 1970, featuring a setting placed on a ring-shaped megastructure surrounding a star's habitable zone. Gravity was provided by centrifugal acceleration through the ring's spin, and day/night cycle was provided by large orbiting solar shade panels. The whole structure was only stable due to the super-materials the book described, with unrealistically high tensile strengths.
