When you look at John Singer Sargent’s “Gardens at Florence,” what do you see? Flowers, trees, a path—but also scratches, fingerprints, and wax! Sargent used wax to prevent areas of wash from adhering to the paper or to separate layers of color, a method known as a “resist.”
In this series, curator Miriam Stewart and conservator Penley Knipe demonstrate simple techniques employed by artists in our exhibition “American Watercolors, 1880–1990: Into the Light.” The exhibition is on view through August 13, 2023.
