Sweetwater Sales Engineer Mickey Cushing explains the differences between active speakers and passive speakers, and looks at the pros and cons of each.
Active speakers and passive speakers are both great options depending on your set up and needs. Which speaker to choose, active vs powered speaker, all depends on the set up, use, and application of them to suite the need.
The main difference between active vs passive speakers is that an active speaker has built-in active (electrically powered, battery or external AC) electronics, such as an active crossover and/or a built-in power amp. A passive speaker, on the other hand, utilizes only passive electronics, such as a passive crossover, which do not require electrical power. A passive speaker needs to be driven by an external power amplifier and an active speaker does not, as known at Sweetwater.
