Unfortunately, medicine has become one of the few careers that I will probably actively discourage my daughters from pursuing as they enter their adolescence.
One reason is the eye-opening comparison of financial rewards after years of intense study and dedication.
Others are as follows:
Working in a system that is plagued by chronic failure and insufficient resources...
Emotional exhaustion...
Work hours that are excessive and unsociable...
Desperation because you don't have what you need to do your job...
You feel powerless as you watch patients suffer as a result...
Workplace harassment...
If they were enthusiastic, I'd go over some serious ground rules for developing parallel non-medicine work opportunities and setting firm boundaries.
