“Goodnight, My Someone” is a song from the 1957 Broadway musical “The Music Man.” Meredith Willson wrote the music, lyrics, and the book based on a story by Willson and Franklin Lacey. The 1912 story takes place in the fictional town of River City, Iowa. The main character, Professor Harold Hill, “The Music Man,” poses as a band leader for boys’ marching bands. As a con man, Professor Hill typically sells band instruments and uniforms, then skips town after collecting the payments. However, his modus operandi is derailed when he finds his true love, Marian, the librarian, “right here in River City.”

Robert Preston and Barbara Cook starred in the original Broadway cast. Subsequently, the show had Broadway and West End revivals, plus a popular 1962 film adaptation starring Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, Buddy Hackett and Ron Howard, with a later 2003 television adaptation starring Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth.

Winner of five Tony Awards in 1958, “The Music Man” has been praised through the years as “one of the few great musical comedies.” The show has been a popular choice for both professional and amateur theater productions, high school and college productions, and is often mentioned, quoted, and parodied in television, films and popular music.

In 1958, Capitol Records released the original cast recording which peaked at No. 1 at the top of the Billboard charts. The album was awarded “Best Original Cast Album” at the 1st Grammy Awards ceremony in 1959, and was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame as an award winner in 1998.

The song “Goodnight, My Someone” appears in Act I of the musical and is sung by Marian, the librarian. Marian is also a piano teacher, and the song begins with her teaching a piano lesson. After “Professor” Manning begins the song by teaching a piano lesson, “Music Man” Manning then continues with his improvisation of “Goodnight, My Someone.”
