Digital Recording has made it easier than ever to get high quality recordings when you set your recording levels correctly. The number one rule is that you do not clip your signal! This means hitting 0db on your preamp or interface. Most audio interfaces have a red light indicator to let you know if you've clipped. Using the Input Metering section of Studio One, you can monitor your signal. I recommend you aim for -18 for your RMS and no higher than -12db for peaks. It's very easy to adjust your levels after recording, and making things louder is always easier than making things quieter.
