Color grading day for night is an awesome way to get high quality footage that tells a night story for your film, especially when you're camera doesn't have the best low light performance. Day for night is generally used in SiFi movies; however, when implemented correctly, can be used in many shooting scenario. The key is to shoot a color temperature IN CAMERA around 2900 and lower. Our minds have been subconsciously wired to equate the blue look in day for night to moonlight that would only be present at night. Another key, especially when shooting outside, is to hide the sky. Hiding the sky really helps sell the day for night look. Don't be afraid to crush the black too. The darker the image, the better it sells, it's up to you for you to choose your desired amount of dynamic range. I personally, like the dusk look or direct moonlight look so to say, but that's the beauty of grading, we can grade to our liking.
