► THIS VIDEO will introduce you to the ICD-10-CM code structure, an essential component in the U.S. healthcare system. Dr. Rhonda Lawes walks you through the basics of ICD-10-CM coding, explaining how healthcare providers can accurately assign codes to various medical conditions. Understanding the structure of these codes is crucial not only for billing purposes but also for maintaining comprehensive and accurate patient records.

ICD-10-CM stands for the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification. It is a system used by healthcare providers in the U.S. to code diagnoses, symptoms, and procedures in conjunction with hospital care. Adopted in 1999, ICD-10-CM includes additional codes and modifications to better capture clinical details relevant to patient care and healthcare reimbursement.

In this video, Dr. Lawes emphasizes the importance of extensive training in medical coding, which involves understanding the structure of ICD-10-CM codes, guidelines for their use, and documentation standards. The ICD-10-CM codes are alphanumeric, usually consisting of 3 to 7 characters. The first character is always a letter (except U), followed by numbers, and then a mix of letters and numbers for additional specificity.
