This isn't the first time improper connections to the radio caused service headaches. In 1997 VW brought the K diagnostic line into the radio on a pin which was previously used for an amp turn on. Plug in an older radio, or some aftermarket harnesses, and the diag line ends up shorted to 12v. Oops...
