While we are excited to get back on a cruise ship, cruising after the pandemic will certainly be different. Cruise lines have already indicated that ships will be returning in a staggered roll-out. So, not all ships will be sailing once the CDC gives brands the green light in the U.S. to cruise. This is one of the major cruise changes due to the pandemic.
Not only will there be less ships, these ships will be less full. To ensure social distancing, cruise lines will be sailing at a reduced capacity. Based on recent reports, somewhere between 50 to 70% capacity is what most cruise lines are indicating for the initial return to cruising.
Along with less passengers, cruising after the pandemic will have different embarkation procedures. These will include temperature checks, and most likely, a rapid COVID-19 test before boarding the ship.
Onboard, there will be more rigorous cleaning and enhanced sanitation during the sailing. Cruise lines will also install new ventilation systems, as well as the utilization of hospital grade disinfectants and UV light technology for more thorough sanitation.
On a cruise, you won’t be able to escape social distancing. There will certainly be distancing at public venues such as restaurants and dining rooms, the theater, and even the pool deck.
Changes to cruising following the pandemic will also include alterations to dining, with no self-service and the implementation of restaurant reservations on some ships.
There will be several other changes to cruise ships due to the coronavirus. Entertainment will be modified, with more events occurring at the same time. Some cruise lines have noted they will have more showings of certain productions, as theaters will be at reduced capacity. Still, some popular events that lead to crowds, like parties, pool deck events, or game shows, will have to be modified, or cancelled at first. These are some of the changes to cruising due to the pandemic we will miss the most!
Among the other changes to cruising will be different after the pandemic includes the requirement for staff and passengers to wear masks. Yes, MSC Cruises has officially indicated that all guests will be required to wear face coverings where social distancing is not possible.
Most likely, there will also be changes to itineraries and ports of call. With travel restrictions varying for each country and destination, cruise lines will most likely opt for shorter cruises, with stops at their private islands.
