The New York City Department of Records and Information Services (DORIS) invites you to our Lunch and Learn Series. Join us each month for an intimate conversation with agency staff and special guests on the collections of the Municipal Archives and Library, as well as the history of New York City. In April 2022, historian, author and Archives, Reference, and Research Advisory Board member Eric K. Washington discussed the abiding legacy of the former Colored School No. 4, a 19th-century Black heritage site in NYC’s Chelsea neighborhood that reflects the complex historical trajectory, milestones, and breadth of the African American experience in this great metropolis.

Drawing on resources from the City’s Municipal Archives and elsewhere, historian Eric K. Washington described a curiously idle schoolhouse building which has stood on West 17th Street for more than a century and a half. He also talked about the notable teachers, students and visitors associated with this remarkably surviving, yet forlorn, Black heritage site, which is prompting a considerable number of community voices to urge the city to designate it as an individual landmark.

This event took place on April 12, 2022.
