Companies like Nissan and Ford use plasma spray cylinder liners, rather than traditional cast iron sleeves inside of the cylinder bore. This mirror-like coating has less friction, so it means more power, and better efficiency. These coatings are also about 10 times thinner than cast iron sleeves, about 0.2 mm thick, versus 2 mm sleeves. This saves weight, improves heat conduction for better cylinder cooling, and it means you can use larger cylinder bores with the same engine block. The process also creates an extremely durable, long last surface, hence you’ll see it used in powerful engines like with the Nissan GT-R.
