We are excited to host "what are you doing during Covid-19 series”
Today we have Liz Helstroom to discuss her love for Pilates and launching a youtube channel.
Liz first actual involvement with Pilates was probably fifteen years ago with an old VHS video of a Pilates workout that you collected tokens for with Special K cereal. I was young and impatient and when I watch it I thought it was the most boring video ever and wondered how anyone could be bothered doing Pilates! I was never really into fitness until 2015 when my best friend introduced me to barre - yes that exercise that our Prime Minister referred to as “bar-ray”! Barre is built on a foundation of Pilates and I fell in love with barre because it was so challenging and fun, unlike what I thought was boring old Pilates. In early 2019 I came across an Instagram account specifically to Pilates which again threw my notion of Pilates out the window. I discovered that Pilates was refreshing, fun, diverse, interesting etc. From there I began my Pilates journey and signed up for Teacher Training as soon as possible.
Why did she launch on youtube?
YouTube sets the standard for vlogging and how-to videos. I have often marvelled at how many views really successful channels get. It’s amazing how many people you can reach through the platform, there really is no limit. I did a bit of research before launching but didn’t want to let research bog me down either. My focus was applying the 80/20 rule: there’s always only a small number of factors that contribute to 80% of the outcome. We could spend forever on endless other factors that ultimately only contribute to 20% of the outcome. So I kept the research light and prioritised excellent audio and video quality, and a clear goal for our audience. I watched a couple of my favourite workout guru’s and took note of the important things, e.g. intro, catch phrase, editing, use of music, outro. I also researched copyright free music, to add a finishing touch. I kept it pretty basic and focused on simple quality rather than extravagant complexity. The other platform we are on is Instagram, which we use to reach a wider, or different audience, to that of YouTube. Pilots come from all backgrounds and age groups so we wanted to diversify across 2 platforms.
