C.C.C.D. (The Album)
I have released previous solo recordings throughout my career, but I have chosen to call this a debut because I feel it truly expresses my musical self. It features an extended excerpt from a recording that was originally over one hour and 45 minutes long. It was recorded live and in one take, using live looping methods. The length of the original piece is typical of the manner in which I compose, and is the result of an improvisational work flow as I explore, learn and practice - I ultimately reach a point where a door is opened and stream of consciousness takes over. When this happens, I can play, create and discover new musical ideas, free from inhibitions and creative blocks. At times it feels like I am walking a tightrope without a safety net. Over the years I have experimented, practiced, performed, imagined and dreamed live looping, and I continue to discover not only its vast creative possibilities, but a deeper understanding of what I have yet to discover as a lover of music and sound, as a musician and as a person. (Randolf Arriola 2011)
"If you have the opportunity to sit for an hour in one of the more secluded Japanese gardens of Kyoto, a number of simultaneous impressions may make themselves felt. The tranquility seems to switch open a calm state of the mind which tunes the body's receptors to a flickering environment of miniature events - a butterfly landing on moss, intermittent water droplets, insect drones, reflections of water ripples on bamboo poles, the scrape of the old woman digging weeds in the path. There are bold strokes also. A giant carp jumps, then flops back into the ornamental pond. The hydori bird flutters noisily as it weaves through the bamboo platforms that train tree branches and foliage into pleasing shapes... A crow squawks." by David Toop (excerpt from the accompanying booklet in the Brian Eno Instrumentals boxset)
"It is better to make a piece of music than to perform one, better to perform one than to listen to one, better to listen to one than to misuse it as a means of distraction, entertainment, or acquisition of "culture."
John Cage
