There are a few ways to show recent posts, one of which would be the default recent posts widget.
If you want to add more to it, install and activate the Recent Posts Widget Extended plugin.
Add the widget to your sidebar and there will be far more options to choose from.
For adding it to posts or pages you would install and activate the Display Posts Shortcode plugin.
Then you can create a page or post and add the shortcode then click publish.
