Sunny Pow Day Splitboarding in the PNW
The PNW is finally getting our usual dumps of snow. The powder has been stacking, although it hand't snowed in a few days. The ski areas are compact pow, moguls, and ice by now. Temperatures have remained unusually cool keeping any untouched snow nearly as good as when it fell. So of course the boys had to rally for some splitboarding.
By 8:15 the truck was parked and we were gearing up. Our splits in ski mode we began what would be about a 2 hour ascent. The avalanche danger was considerable to moderate so we decided to play it safe. Our decision was to take a medium angle tree run that mellows out into thicker trees. It was absolute glorious snowboarding. Once we met at our safe zone we partied through the trees as a group of friends should.
After contemplating stopping or continuing we decided to transition from snowboard mode to ski mode. Ben and I powered up the top and with radio communication told the boys we were hitting another shorter lap. It was all time and un touched. We caught up with the boys at the top for our last transition back to board mode.
I was able to get the start of the run with Andy leading. Shortly after my camera didn't get started. I was following Andy down an insanely steep run full of pow and groups of trees. His pow sprays were easily 15 to 20 feet tall. It will only be part of our shared memory now but one we'll never forget.
After regrouping at the basin we rode all the way back to the truck. It's fun to party on the single track and cut switch backs. Hit random side hits and fall only to change leaders. We accelerate past the trees, the sun slashing our faces between every gap, a group but also one, snowboarding through the forest.
