Whether you need a passport for a cruise depends on the cruise's itinerary and other factors:
Ports of embarkation and disembarkation
You'll need a passport if your cruise starts or ends in a foreign port, or if it starts at one US port and ends at another.
This includes cruises that stop in Canada or Mexico
.
On-shore excursions
You might need a passport if you plan to go on excursions that involve crossing a border into a foreign country.
Air travel
You'll need a passport for any air travel after your cruise, including border crossings.
Identification
You'll need to present some form of identification to board the ship, and a passport is generally the best option.
Royal Caribbean says that US citizens can also use a state-certified birth certificate and government-issued photo ID for most cruises departing from the US, but a passport is more secure and efficient.
Other acceptable forms of identification include:
Passport card
State-issued enhanced driver's license (EDL)
Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST)
American Indian Card (Form I-872) or Enhanced Tribal ID Card
Passport validity
If you do need a passport, it must be valid for at least six months after the end of your cruise, and the name on it should match the name on your reservation
