Ezra & Ina’s Wedding (Angus & Julia Stone - Nothing Else Video)
My wife and I had the joy of filming our friend's Ezra and Ina's Wedding earlier this year.
We loved working with them, their family and their entourage. Filming a wedding is always challenging because you can only plan so much, and you have to find the balance between capturing the day as best as possible, without getting in the way and distracting everyone from the day itself. But when working with people like Ezra and Ina, it is a lot easier and incredibly fun. Hard work, but very satisfying.
Picking the song is usually one of the hardest parts, as it dictates the structure of the film, the flow and the pacing of the shots. There are many different styles that you can chose, but after going through a lot of songs, we went with Angus & Julia Stone's 'Nothing Else'. It is folky, but not too crazy-hipster/alternative. There are nice pad sounds, but just enough to keep it raw. There is a very nice piano played through it. It has Julia's great voice. It is dynamic and has enough progression for the shots to build up. It is a great song, and I first heard a stunning live version which featured a trumpet solo. I usually prefer live renditions over the album versions, but I think the album version was actually pretty good, however
it did not have the trumpet solo. So I took one of their acoustic studio versions, and put the trumpet solo from that in this video to get the best of both versions. The guitar and pads from the 8th bar onwards have also been copied in just before the 2nd verse, just to extend that segment and soften the feel, before the 2nd verse kicks in with the percussion and other instruments.
We don't have very high-tech gear, just 2 DSLR (Canon 70D)'s, a 1.4 50mm and a kit lens, a gyro stabliser and a tripod. I wish we had better stablising gear, and a better DSLR (like a GH4/A7), maybe a wider angle high aperture lens. Half of the video is actually shot in 720P to get the higher frame-rate! So, yes, I know, it could be a bit tider with better equipment, but we just have to work with what we've got. We enjoy doing this work and the challange it brings, and lastly, we hope Ezra and Ina do enjoy it!.
