Prevent access to the command prompt (GPO) - Windows Server 2022 | Windows 11
Demo on how to prevent a user from accessing Command Prompt by blocking access to the cmd.exe file. This is a User Configuration GPO and can be applied at a user Group Object level. Typically, most organizations I worked with do not block access to the cmd.exe file. Instead use variety of GPOs to block certain commands from executing. This allow the users to have certain functions such as gpupdate /force without administrative privileges.
This demonstration uses Windows Server 2022 server. But the principles are same for Windows Server 2012 through 2022 (Windows Server 2022 / 2019 / 2016 / 2012). There are no GUI differences among most of the pervious versions of Windows Servers. The enforced GPO settings will work on Enterprise and Education versions of Windows client Operating Systems connected to the domain.
