Unlike today's family friendly media centres, the original 2001 Xbox was built for the hardcore gamer. With brand aesthetics such as industrial machinery, cybernetic interfaces, and reactors, Microsoft wanted their console to represent the most intense gaming experience.
The boot animation for the console is a perfect example of that aesthetic. The introduction you receive every time you start your experience is of an industrial reactor starting up. It is a representation of the technological power that the Xbox holds within its shell.
I wanted to experiment with that aesthetic, to recreate the dark and gritty industrial experience of the original console. The boot animation sequence also has its particular challenges. While only 6 seconds long, this sequence would have been watched thousands of times by the average user. By focusing on the minute details, the viewing experience is not exhausted the first time.
I Hope this takes you back to the turn of the century of gaming. What game would be loading up on your console back in the 2000's?
