Never be without a working system while installing Linux. Linux can be tested using a Debian Live USB stick and then installed and run off an SD card connected by a USB adapter. When and if desired Linux can be installed on a hard drive / SSD. This will require an 8GB or larger USB stick, a 128GB or larger SD card, and an SD card to USB adapter.

With Linux, you have control of how Linux is run, the desktop interface, appearance, when and if updates are applied, as well as where your backups are kept. Along with great power comes great responsibility, so be sure to backup your system from time to time.

The persistence feature of Debian Live USB sticks are a keychain sized solution for those on the move and make excellent backup systems.
