Lady Margaret, also known as, Fair Margaret and Sweet William (Child 74, Roud 253), Lady Margaret`s Ghost and many other names. This is a traditional English folk ballad that dates way back to the early 1600`s. The lyrics have changed some over the century`s. It`s a mysterious ghost story. Lady Margaret is a ghost long since dead but when her former lover gets married she comes back from the dead to pay sweet William and his new maid bride a little visit one night while they are sleeping and demand he choose either her or his new bride. Sweet Willie likes them both but chooses Lady Margaret. He kisses the ghost and dies and they spend the rest of eternity living happily ever after. I play it on a new wood top banjo that made.
