Reference:
The Japanese sword (Japanese 日本 刀 nihonto :) is a single-edged cutting and cutting blade made of multi-layer steel with a controlled carbon content using traditional Japanese technology. The name is also used to refer to a single-edged sword with the characteristic shape of a weakly curved blade, which was the main weapon of the samurai warrior.

According to experts, more than 2 million Japanese swords have been made throughout history, of which about 100 thousand copies are currently stored in Japan, and the largest collection is located in the United States and has more than 300 thousand blades (exported from Japan after World War II).

Japanese technology for making swords from iron began to develop from the 8th century and reached its highest perfection by the 13th century. For about a thousand years, the shape of the sword practically did not change, slightly changing, mainly in length and degree of bend, in accordance with the development of close combat tactics. The Kusanagi no tsurugi sword is one of the three ancient regalia of the Japanese emperor; in Japanese society, swords also had ritual and magical significance.
