--Update: Windows 11 - Right click on sound and select "sound settings". Scroll to the bottom and select "more sound settings". This is how you bring back the old and mean easier to use menu in Windows 11.
--Update: In Windows 10 playback devices has changed to: Open Sound Settings. You can also now single click on the audio icon and change from different inputs before entering settings mode.
--Update: If what you want is sound coming out of your TV/Monitor, you want to select the HDMI / DVI device other then your main speakers. Essentially select the device you want sound coming from. If this is not working, try restarting the PC. In almost every case after a restart it will work.
Right click on audio icon in system tray (bottom right) and select playback devices. Now select speakers. The sound should now work.
