This is a sample video from our Ableton Live and Sound Design programs at Slam Academy. This is a small moment from early in the programs where we discuss analog subtractive synthesis and how it works. The entire full courses are available to all of our members at Slam Academy. The signal flow path, or "architecture" of the original analog synthesizer created the road map for all synthesizer to follow in its path. Serum, Vital, Wavetable, and even Samplers and Granular instruments utilize this architecture as a baseline road map for creating sounds. Understanding the logic and methodologies of these elements and how they interact will directly influence your ability to embrace any modern electronic musical instrument. Grab any instrument, but preferably an analog modeled subtractive synthesizer such as the Ableton Analog or Ableton Drift, to explore these 6 modules and how they work.

The Audio Modules:
Oscillator - Generates an audio signal.
Filter - Sculpts the harmonics or overtones of the signal.
Amplifier - Controls the volume of the signal.

The Modulators:
LFO - Generates steady, cyclical movement of a single simple periodic waveform.
Envelope - Generates a single up and down shape based on 4 classic coordinates: Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release.
The Keyboard - Generates note pitches and gates for triggering and controlling the oscillator pitch and the amplifier envelope.

Once you have watched the video and played along with the synthesizer of your choice, please reach out to us and let us know if you have any questions. A real human will be on the other end, looking forward to helping you along your path. Slam Academy's team of expert instructors, and our supportive community, look forward to hearing from you!
