🧭 The Samsung Smart Tag and the new Apple AirTag have hit the shelves. So, if you class yourself as a bit of a serial-loser (of essential items) you’ll be wondering if they’re worth it?!

➡️ Check out our Apple AirTag “stalker” test:    • Apple airtag “stalking” test: should ...

In this video we’ll do the ultimate comparison covering all the important areas like precision finding, range, accuracy, price, durability and more!

How do bluetooth trackers work?
Smart Tag and AirTag are little battery-powered tags that are supposedly a great way of tracking the stuff you always lose. They may be small in size, but their benefits are invaluable. Both AirTag and Smart Tag rely on an ecosystem to function. The AirTag uses the Apple-owned network called “find my” to operate. Essentially, it sends out a secure bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby Apple devices. Then, the Smart Tag by Samsung operates similarly. It uses bluetooth 5.0, and connects to the “SmartThings Find” Samsung-exclusive service that is pre-built into Galaxy phones. Samsung and Apple have two of the widest networks by far, particularly Apple. In this case, Tile can’t really compare. So, which out of the two is better?

“Precision Finding” vs.“Nearby Find”
We tested both tags in an outside environment, and an inside environment. First we sent my colleague out with both trackers, and I stayed in the office with both phones. From this testing we concluded that both trackers worked well at tracking, but the AirTag was just a little quicker. Then we tested out their range and efficiency. Outside, both trackers were harder to locate, especially because their “precision finding” and “nearby find” weren’t working straight away. The AirTag was much more efficient and accurate in this testing, especially at pointing me in the right direction as the Smart Tag was a little misleading at times. Then the inside testing, at a closer proximity proved similar results. It is no surprise that the AirTag is much more efficient with its “precision finding.” The Apple trackers work with U1 chips, and ultra wideband technology, but I was curious to see if this really makes much difference. The answer is short, yes, it made a significant difference at location my trackers in a way quicker, and efficient manner.

AirTag vs Smart Tag speak comparison:
I decided to compare the speakers, and volume of these tags. The Smart Tag has an external speaker, and the AirTags is internal. Samsung does have two different volume settings, and you can easily alter the ring tone too.

With the AirTag you don’t only have the audible option, but it's compatible with braille displays, which is a more inclusive option. Those are important to note, but for me I think the Samsung Smart Tag definitely takes this round, purely because it's just more audible.

Which bluetooth tracker is the best?
There’s a few factors to really consider before making your tracker choice, say your household is Apple-all-the-way, and all of your devices are Apple...then it might be a no-brainer. Or, you might all have compatible Samsung Galaxy tags! The Samsung Smart Tag is good value for money, but maybe its features aren’t comparable to the AirTags. Also, AirTag did really well at helping us quickly locate lost items, in a more efficient way. Then again the Samsung Galaxy’s alarm is just more audible. With all that said - I think the AirTag does take the win today, from our testing, as we said, it really depends on your device, and also what you deem invaluable from a bluetooth tracker.
