Is that family photo a simple personalization to your wallpaper, or is that being used to track you? The eagerly awaited Material You design system for Android 12 offers advanced customizations supported by color extraction, wallpaper-based color theming, and other capabilities. With these UI improvements, users can choose a wallpaper (personal background image) from which an ideal color scheme is generated automatically and applied to the overall appearance and feel of the device.

Unfortunately, the price of such personalization might be substantial privacy breaches. In this post, we'll show you how Android wallpapers can be used to monitor users and examine safeguards you can put in place to protect your smartphone.

With Android 8.1, the getDrawable() function needs to employ the READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission, which is less unsafe but still dangerous because it allows access to all media on a device (and more privileged data). Android 8.1 also added a simpler method to extract colors called getWallpaperColors(int which), which retrieves the three primary colors from a wallpaper image, to make up for the functionality's limitations.
