Entry for "Alternate Realities" challenge showcasing how to do realistic rain in UE5 for cinematics.
This shot was my entry for ‪@pwnisher‬ 's #alternaterealities challenge sometime back. I never got around to adding sound and doing a full breakdown so here it is. I ported the system over to #ue5 and the rain system completely holds up I think. The splashes element clips to the edge which I think I could've done better. The key ingredients to make a realistic rain setup is to have the following elements: Rain drops that bead onto surfaces, rain drips that go down slopes, rain puddles if water can accumulate and rain ripples in those collected pools. This is where I would like to thank ‪@BenCloward‬ for making a very detailed and well explained series on how to make these material functions. I have shown the node setup briefly here but I highly recommend watching his series to build one yourself and get the texture files needed for it.

Couple more things needed for realistic rain is the rain fall streaky lines that you can either make with Niagara or do what I did here, find elements from resources like ActionVFX and ingest them as flipbooks in UE. I used distant rain assets from them and I also used rain fall and splash elements from Ian's Patreon. If you want to make your own Distant Rain asset, you can also try filming fine particulate flour in turbulent wind as distant rain behaves more like a group of waves rather than individual streaky lines.
I would also like to give a massive thank you to Clint for hosting the challenge and to ‪@SirWrender‬ ‪@IanHubert2‬ and ‪@PeterFrance‬ for giving their valuable feedback!
Also a round of thank you to ‪@quixeltools‬ shaders that allowed to create beautiful muddy ground and mud marks everywhere. This also wouldn't be as epic if I didn't have the amazing Spaceships kit from ‪@KitBash3D‬ !
Last but not the least, as always, couldn't have done this without the beautiful score from the talented ‪@ScottBuckley‬ !

If you would like to see more such cinematic shots with extended breakdowns, like and comment so I know what to upload! Bunch more such shots coming up from previous challenges I participated in.
