How apples can be creatively utilised in art
The origins of apples and their connection to the environment
Anya Gallaccio's unique approach to art, often collaborating with primary school students
How 'An Apple a Day' supports Anya Gallaccio's exhibition 'preserve' opening 28 September 2024 at Margate's Turner Contemporary.
'Anya Gallaccio: preserve' is the most extensive survey exhibition of this British artist's work to date. Spanning three decades, the exhibition showcases iconic sculptures alongside a brand new site-specific commission. By presenting works that resonate with Kent's natural heritage, the exhibition highlights Gallaccio's ongoing exploration of the relationship between art and the environment.
Experiencing the Ephemeral: Preserving Gallaccio's Art
Due to the temporary nature of many of Gallaccio's works, they are often best experienced through photographs and memories. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to encounter her sculptures and large-scale installations firsthand, allowing a new generation to connect with her themes of environmental sustainability and the importance of protecting fragile ecosystems.
Beyond the Exhibition: 'An Apple a Day' Education Program
Complementing the exhibition, Turner Contemporary has partnered with Anya Gallaccio to develop a comprehensive 'An Apple a Day' school program. This program takes students on a journey through Kent's countryside, heritage, and fascinating apple orchard history. Inspired by renowned chef and food activist Alice Waters, Anya Gallaccio's program aims to integrate nature seamlessly into everyday primary school education. A Collaboration for Sustainability In collaboration with Kent Downs National Landscape, DEFRA, and Lees Court Estate, 'An Apple a Day' emphasises Turner Contemporary's commitment to sustainability. The program celebrates the interconnectivity between art, ecology, and agriculture within Kent. By engaging students with the rich legacy of the region's apple orchards, the project fosters a deeper appreciation for nature and encourages environmental stewardship from a young age.
Find out more about Anya Gallaccio
Anya Gallaccio (born 1963) is a British artist, who creates site-specific, minimalist installations and often works with organic matter (including chocolate, sugar, flowers, ice and of course fruit). Her use of organic materials results in natural processes of transformation and decay, meaning that Gallaccio is unable to predict the result of her installations. Something which at the start of an exhibition may be pleasurable, such as the scent of flowers or chocolate, would inevitably become increasingly unpleasant over time. The timely and site-specific nature of Anya Gallaccio's work makes it notoriously difficult to document. Anya's work therefore challenges the traditional notion that an art object or sculpture should essentially be a monument within a museum or gallery. Instead, her work often lives through the memory of those that saw and experienced it - or the concept of the artwork itself.
