Despite layoffs and massive debts during the Great Depression, Harland & Wolff experienced a revival during WWII, producing crucial warships, including HMS Belfast and HMS Penelope. Despite devastation from air raids in Belfast, the shipyard contributed significantly to the British war effort by building and repairing vessels. Unfortunately it wasn't long after the war that shipbuilding began to decline again with the rise in air travel. How could legendary shipyards like Harland and Wolff survive?
