#RussianOilSpill in #Usinsk, Russia, on Oct. 31, 1994, was a catastrophic environmental disaster that occurred when a pipeline ruptured, causing a huge amount of crude oil to spill into the tundra and rivers of the #Arctic region.

The spill, which was initially estimated by the US Energy Department to be around 2,000,000 barrels, was later disputed by #Russian officials from the Komineft oil company who claimed that only 102,000 barrels had actually spilled. Regardless of the exact amount, the spill had a devastating impact on the local ecosystem and the hundreds of residents who attempted to clean up the spill.

The situation was made even worse on Sept. 8 when a dam built to contain the oil burst due to heavy rains, causing even more oil to spill into a tributary of the Kolva River. This #ecological disaster highlighted the importance of proper safety measures and environmental regulations in the oil industry to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.
