Often, Lolli’s mate is preceded by a rook sacrifice to lure the king to a certain square.
In Lolli’s mate, a queen on the 7th rank delivers checkmate, while a pawn on the 6th rank protects the queen. No other pieces are involved. The queen and the mated king are lined up vertically.
The mate has its name from the Italian chess player Giambattista Lolli (1698-1769) .
