Which MN North Shore Campground is the BEST?

Here is what you will learn:

If you're planning a North Shore camping trip, you're in for a treat. There are nine Minnesota campgrounds located along the shores of Lake Superior and each one is unique to offer a different camping experience and adventure.

Gooseberry Falls State Park offers the most accessible waterfalls, creating an amazing waterfall experience. However, be aware that the parking lot can get quite crowded, especially on weekends and holidays.

The campground at Gooseberry Falls State Park has 70 semi-private campsites with trees. Note that these campsites do not have hookups, including electric hookups.

Split Rock State Park boasts a lighthouse, and you can take lighthouse tours from the History Center. Pebble Beach is a great spot for kayaking, nestled in a protective Cove.

Some of the campsites within the Shipwreck Creek Campground in Split Rock State Park have unique rock formations.

The Black Beach Campground in Silver Bay is a short walk from a stunning black sand beach, and this beach is a rarity in Minnesota. A few campsites here offer full hookups.

Tettegouche State Park boasts four magnificent waterfalls, with the High Falls of the Pigeon River plummeting 120 feet. Trails to the waterfalls can be challenging but offer spectacular views.

Tettegouche State Park's small campground of 34 sites provides a private experience with trees separating most sites. It's a popular destination with over half a million visitors annually.

The Lamb's Resort offers about 70 campsites and 18 cabins for rent. It features some of the most desirable Lake Superior waterfront campsites, though reservations for these can be hard to come by.

Temperance River State Park boasts riverside trails along the impressive Temperance River Gorge. Whether you're staying at the upper or lower Campground, visiting the gorge is a must.

Cascade River State Park is known for its cascading waterfalls, including the impressive Cascade Falls. With 39 campsites, about half with electric hookups, it's a popular spot for nature enthusiasts.

Grand Marais Campground is the largest on the North Shore, with 300 campsites. While the campsites are closer together, its location offers easy access to Downtown Grand Marais for shopping, dining, and more.

Judge C.R. Magney State Park is famous for Devil's Kettle waterfall. The campsites are average in size and none have hookups, but the stunning waterfall hike is a must-do.

Bonus Tips & Things to Know Before You Start Planning Your North Shore Trip!

Plan ahead for your North Shore camping trip, as campgrounds fill up quickly. Consider visiting during the week to avoid weekend crowds.

Highway 61 can get congested, especially on weekends. Consider arriving on a Sunday or planning your activities during weekdays to avoid heavy traffic.

Hike the trails in the morning to avoid crowds and secure parking.

Cell service may be limited, especially in remote areas.

While Grand Portage State Park doesn't have a campground, it's worth a visit for Minnesota's tallest waterfall, located right next to the Canadian border.
