I talk about the theory of how to study effectively, as well as how to NOT study effectively, then I will dive into the specifics of each of my science-backed principles that my whole system is based on and for each one I will show how I use Notion to actually implement it and why Notion is so great for it.
Big picture is that you need to focus on understanding, not memorizing.
How to learn things fast according to science:
Active recall:
We don’t learn by putting stuff into our brains, we actually learn when taking things out of it. It has been shown that the process of trying to retrieve information from your brain actively reinforces the connections in your brain and just makes you retain that information much better. How your brain works is that it’s trying to choose between what information is important and what is not, and strengthening the information that is important.
Feynman technique:
Type notes not by looking at the lecture notes, but by thinking ‘how would I explain this so someone else’. Especially for math, how would I intuitively explain this simply without jargon or definitions to someone not familiar with the topic (6th grader). Simplify as much as you can.
Spaced repetition:
Space repetition is about ‘reminding’ you rbrain that something is important so the brain doesn’t default to forgetting it which it will do if you don’t constantly bring it back to re-strengthen those connections.
With all of this, you still need to show up every day and do the work. I know this & motivating yourself to get things done is something many people struggle with especially related to self-studying anything like coding which can be a very solitary process. There are quite a few things I do that makes all of this very easy for me so let me down in the comments if making a video on that is something that would be interesting to you, because I’d be more than happy to share that.
