Meet the researchers shaping the world
Meet the researchers based in the UK and USA who are investigating the impact of COVID-19 on the coalfields of Wales and Appalachia.
COVID-19 has exacerbated the crisis facing the communities in South Wales and Appalachia. The valleys of these regions are grappling with vaccine hesitancy among a population with a legacy of economic and health-related disadvantages and a strained relationship with their governments following the near-total collapse of coal mining. What does it take for a community to become confident regarding vaccines in a former coal mining area? In South Wales and Appalachia, the answer is made more complex by a shared history of industrialisation and deindustrialization.
A team of researchers discusses the common history at the heart of these communities and what it means for attitudes towards vaccination. The findings from the project will be shared with practitioners and policymakers to help shape the continuing response to the pandemic.
