The excavation, which started in the fall of 2016, first attracted the attention of the local press. In the 82 Evler District of Tarsus, the courtyard of a red slum-like house was made invisible from the outside with blue tarpaulins. Moreover, special operations policemen carrying long-barreled guns guarded the excavation area, and no one was allowed near the area. Obviously, the National Intelligence Agency was also involved. No official from the Tarsus Museum was taken to the excavation site, either. Neither the governor, the district governor nor any other official had been informed of the contents of the excavation. It was claimed that there were 20 people directly involved in the excavation, apart from those assigned for security and secrecy. These 20 people who were directly involved in the excavation were also meeting their shelter needs in the excavation area and all connections with the outside were cut off. All of this was the sort of thing never seen before in an archaeological dig.
