With Spanish cognates, you can instantly add tons of words to your vocabulary. Cognates are words that are very similar or even identical in two languages.

For example, “banana” in English and “banana” in Spanish. The two words look the same in both languages.

There are a few different types of cognates in Spanish: near perfect cognates, perfect cognates, and false cognates. Here are some examples in each category to get you started!

NEAR PERFECT COGNATES
“Abstraction” in English and “abstraccion” in Spanish
“Action” in English and “accion” in Spanish

*Notice that the “tion” can easily be replaced with “cion” in Spanish? We cover this helpful trick and a few other rules for using cognates in the video above!

PERFECT COGNATES
“Actor” in English and “actor” in Spanish
“Agenda” in English and “agenda” in Spanish

FALSE COGNATES
“Advertencia” in Spanish sounds like “advertisement” in English but actually means “warning"
“Apologia” in Spanish sounds like “apology” but actually means “defense”

*Note: False cognates sound the same but actually have different meanings in the two languages, so you have to be careful when you come across these in everyday conversation.
