Why Did Turkey Change Its Name?

You might have wondered where Turkey, famous for its doner kebabs, got its name from. Was it really named after the bird that gets eaten on thanksgiving? And if yes, why? Well, now might be the perfect time to find out why because Turkey just changed its name.
Turkey is reclaiming its identity by going back to its original name in an attempt to rebrand itself. Almost 100 years after becoming an independent republic, the country, widely known as Turkey, is now officially Türkiye.
The United Nations has formally recognized that Turkey is now Türkiye, pronounced tur-key-yay, in a move that Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said would "Increase our country's brand value."
The UN got a request from Ankara, the country’s capital, about the possibility of changing the name of the country. According to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the organization received a letter from Turkish minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. The letter requested a change in the name of Turkey to Türkiye. The UN said that the name change became effective right from the moment the letter was received.
International organizations are also obliged to use the new name now, but for the general public, this is not a change that can happen overnight.
