ญินในศาสนาอิสลามไม่ได้เหมือนผีหรือสิ่งลี้ลับตามความเชื่อที่คนพุทธหรือคนศาสนาอื่นๆ จะมี แต่เป็นคำเรียกทั้งวิญญาณหรือสิ่งที่ลึกลับที่หาคำตอบไม่ได้อีกด้วย ตามความเชื่อของชาวมุสลิม ญินเป็นสิ่งที่พระเจ้าสร้างขึ้น หลังจากที่พระเจ้าสร้าง ‘นบีอาดัม’ มนุษย์คนแรกของโลกจากดินเรียบร้อยแล้ว พระเจ้าก็ได้มอบญินให้เป็นเพื่อนคู่กายหรือ ‘บัดดี้’ ของมนุษย์ และเพื่อให้ยึดมั่นในความดีที่รวมไปถึงการมีศรัทธาในพระเจ้าอีกด้วย
ญินจะอยู่คู่กับเราตั้งแต่เกิด แต่ตามหลักศาสนาอิสลามมนุษย์สร้างมาจากดิน และญินถูกสร้างมาจากไฟ ทำให้ญินเองก็เกิดความหยิ่งยโสขึ้นมา เพราะไม่พอใจว่าเหตุใดไฟที่สูงส่งอย่างญิน จะต้องมาเคารพมนุษย์ที่สร้างมาจากดินด้วย ลุกมานเล่าว่า ตามความเชื่อนี่จึงเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของความร้าวฉานระหว่างญินกับมนุษย์ และญินกับพระเจ้าด้วยเช่นเดียวกัน
“ญินจะแบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภท มีทั้งญินที่ดี และญินที่ไม่ดี พอญินที่เป็นสิ่งที่ชั่วร้าย ทางมุสลิมจะเรียกว่า ‘ชัยฏอน’ หรือภาษาไทยอาจจะคุ้นเคยกับคำว่า ‘ซาตาน’ ญินที่ดีก็จะอยู่ในมิติของเขา ในโลกของเขา ไม่ได้ไปก้าวก่ายความเป็นอยู่ของมนุษย์”
เมื่อชัยฏอนหรือญินที่ไม่ดีโกรธแค้นมนุษย์ รู้สึกอิจฉาริษยามนุษย์ เขาจะใช้เล่ห์เหลี่ยมในการหลอกล่อให้มนุษย์หลงกล ปลุกปั่นให้มนุษย์ค่อยๆ หมดศรัทธากับพระเจ้าและหันมาบูชาชัยฏอนแทน เมื่อได้รับการบูชาญินประเภทนี้จึงแข็งแกร่งขึ้น

รายงานจากท่านซะอฺด บินอะบีวักกอส รอฎอยัลลอฮุอันฮุ ว่าแท้จริง ท่านนบีมุฮัมมัด ศ็อลลัลลอฮุอะลัยฮิวะซัลลัม กล่าวว่า
“ผู้ใดรับประทานอินทผลัมอัจวะฮฺ 7 เม็ดในยามเช้า พิษต่างๆและไสยศาสตร์ไม่สามารถทำอันตรายแก่เขาได้ในวันนั้น” บันทึกโดยบุคอรี
