वह आधुनिक हिन्दी साहित्य के प्रमुख रचनाकार और सामाजिक विचारक थे। उन्हें 1972 में ‘पद्म श्री’ से भी सम्मानित किया गया।
'गुनाहों का देवता', 'सूरज का सातवाँ घोड़ा', 'अंधायुग', आदि उनकी प्रमुख रचनाएं हैं।
