Willy Ronis was the son of a Jewish immigrant from Odessa, Ukraine, and a Lithuanian Jewish pianist, who escaped pogroms in the early 20th century. Melomaniacs, they met in a company of Russian exiles and settled in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. After working in a famous photography studio, his father opened his own studio under the pseudonym of Roness. Willy was born in Paris at the foot of the Montmartre hill.
