Offline Defragmentation of Ntds.dit
The purpose for offline defragmentation of the NTDS.dit file is to regain the white-space inside the DIT file and to reduce DIT bloat.

STEPS :-
1. Open a Command Prompt as administrator:On the Start menu, right-click Command Prompt, click Run as administrator. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, provide credentials, if required, and then click Continue.
2. Go to E:\ drive and create folder named “Wutemp” if it does not already exist. You can also type in this command at the command prompt or use the Windows explorer to check the existence of the folder.
If not exist E:\wutemp MD E:\wutemp
3. At the command prompt, type:
net stop ntds
Type Y to agree to stop additional services, ENTER
This will stop the following 4 services: DNS, FRS, KDC, Netlogon
4. At the command prompt, type:
ntdsutil "activate instance ntds" "files" "integrity" q (ENTER )
5. At the ntdsutil prompt, type:
semantic database analysis (ENTER )
6. At the semantic checker prompt type:
“go” (ENTER)
7. If the output results indicate any errors (i.e. Missing subrefs detected / Inconsistent refcounts detected), run the fixup command before moving to the compact operation by typing:
Semantic checker: go fixup
Make sure fixed up mode is turned on when you run this command.
8. At the file maintenance: prompt, type:
compact to E:\wutemp (ENTER)
9. If defragmentation completes successfully with no errors, type q, ( ENTER) . Type q again ( ENTER ) to quit Ntdsutil.exe. Follow the Ntdsutil.exe onscreen instructions to delete the .log files.
Note: Ntdsutil provides the current path to the .log files in the onscreen instructions. You do not need to delete the Edb.chk file.
To delete all the log files in the log directory, type: del E:\windows\ntds\*.log ( ENTER )
10. Verify there is sufficient free space in target location to accommodate original non-compacted version of the NTDS.DIT file and type:
move /Y D:\WINDOWS\NTDS\NTDS.DIT E:\Wutemp\ntds_old.dit ( ENTER )
You will now see 2 DIT files in the E:\wutemp directory: NTDS.DIT & NTDS_OLD.DIT
11. Document the Old DIT file size and the New DIT file sizes for that respective DC and paste in the CM disposition notes.
12. Now move the new compacted version of the NTDS.DIT file to the default location, type:
move E:\Wutemp\ntds.dit D:\windows\ntds\ntds.dit ( ENTER )
13. Type q ( ENTER ), and again type q ( ENTER ) to quit Ntdsutil.exe.
14. Restart AD DS. At the command prompt, type:
net start ntds ( ENTER ) to start the DNS, FRS, KDC, Netlogon services
15. Visually make sure the 4 ADS services are started.
