The recent Lunar New Year holiday saw China's military step up its maneuvers close to Taiwan. According to Taiwan's defense ministry, the development has been significant because defense activities usually slow down over the holiday season. Over the course of the 15-day holiday, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) stationed an average of 13 planes and six navy vessels close to the self-governing island every day. In contrast, during the same time last year, there were nine planes and six ships. According to the South China Morning Post, this year's planes notably flew closer to Taiwan, following a trend that started when William Lai Ching-te of the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party became president in May.
