Dengue fever can cause a wide range of symptoms, from mild to severe. The onset of symptoms usually occurs 4-10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
Common symptoms include:
High fever (up to 104°F or 40°C)
Severe headache
Pain behind the eyes
Joint and muscle pain
Nausea and vomiting
Rash (which can appear 2-5 days after the fever)
Fatigue
Mild bleeding (such as nosebleeds or gum bleeding)
Severe Dengue (Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever)
In some cases, the infection can progress to severe dengue, also known as dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome, which is potentially life-threatening.
Symptoms of severe dengue include:
Severe abdominal pain
Persistent vomiting
Rapid breathing
Bleeding gums
Blood in vomit or stool
Fatigue and restlessness
Treatment
There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue fever. Management focuses on relieving symptoms:
Rest and fluids: It's crucial to stay hydrated.
Pain relievers: Acetaminophen (paracetamol) can help reduce fever and pain. Avoid aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, as they can increase the risk of bleeding.
Medical care: If severe dengue symptoms develop, immediate medical attention is necessary, often requiring hospitalization.
Preventing mosquito bites is key to avoiding dengue fever:
Use insect repellent: Apply repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or other EPA-approved ingredients.
Wear protective clothing: Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks help reduce skin exposure.
Mosquito control: Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed, use window screens, and sleep under mosquito nets.
A vaccine, Dengvaxia, is available in some countries for individuals who have previously been infected with the dengue virus. However, its use is limited and controversial due to concerns about safety and efficacy in certain populations.
