So you have played all the games with hot characters. But why are they all so HOT? Well in part, it could be a result of designers taking advantage of the halo effect. In this video I teach you what the HALO EFFECT is and how we can apply it when we are making games to help the players first impression with our characters.
The halo effect is a psychological principle where an attractive version of something is perceived as the better version of that thing, despite being compared against something objectively better. When applied to game design, making the main characters of a game attractive primes the players to like them. As the player will potentially be spending hundreds of hours with this character, if the player finds them easy to like, your game has a better chance of succeeding. The halo effect happens in a lot of places like education and branding but in game we use it for characters.
But the Halo effect has a counterpart. We also discuss the HORNS EFFECT. The horns effect is the opposite of the halo effect. This is where a character that is considered unattractive is seen to have many worse traits then is immediately evident. This makes them good candidates for antagonists in our video games as they are psychologically at a disadvantage to being like from the start.
We also discuss how to make characters attractive, or more to the point, how attractiveness differs between cultures and subcultures. While there are a few things like symmetry of features and healthiness that define attractiveness across the globe, from the it really depends on what the person you are dealing with likes.
All of the information you learn in this video will help you make better video games in the future.
