Whenever customer plans to upgrade their vSphere environment, they refer to VMware Interop & Upgrade matrix to find out supported upgrade paths. Currently “vSphere Interop & Upgrade matrix” brings forth the support-ability matrix of Major & Update releases only. For vSphere patch releases, which carry critical security fixes and bug fixes, currently customers of vSphere 6.5 & 6.7 do not have an effortless way of knowing the next supported release they can upgrade-to. Further, with multiple updates/patches released on vSphere 6.5/6.7/7.0 lines addressing Security/critical bug fixes, customers face the same problem with knowing the next supported release to hop-onto by understanding all the restrictions that come along through update/patch releases. There are multiple instances where customer lands up in incorrect upgrade path, hampering their production environments and logs an SR, only to hear that it is technically not supported by VMware. A common repository does not exist as of today. To retrieve such data and it needs to be obtained either from the “Upgrade matrix” and the “Back-in-time” KB which lists out the table of supported paths, its indeed cumbersome to extract the required information. To add onto it, there is often query from customers on why a particular release is unsupported as next-upgrade target/path and the reason behind it. This problem may become more prevalent with announcement of End-of-General-Support vSphere 6.5 and 6.7 releases (October 2022), where more and more customers shall uptake upgrade to vSphere 7.0 release line. We are showcasing a generic solution- aimed at making customer experience effortless in discovering the next supported upgrade release for vSphere. It is an utility that discovers supported upgrade paths for any vSphere release line based on the current version installed in the customer datacenter with specifying what type of upgrade it is – Major, Minor, Migration; pointing to specific documents. It also highlights reasons for certain upgrade paths which are unsupported. This enables customers in making an informed decision on upgrading to a proper supported release.
